AVIGNON TRIP – November 2011

17 intrepid twin towners had an enjoyable and action packed four days in Avignon.  The merry band included our present and future mayors.  The trip was ably led and organized by Jenny.

The initial journey was not without its excitement, as when boarding the TGV at Lille, two of our members had their bags unzipped and Elizabeth Baines had her purse stolen.  Amazingly the crime was spotted and two young ladies were subsequently arrested.    Not a good start and made us all very security conscious.

I did not appreciate having my wallet stolen on Lille station, but I was very grateful to both the young man who spotted suspicious activity and the chef du train for their advice and support at the time.  I was also very impressed by the courtesy and efficiency of the Police Nationale at Avignon, although I was somewhat surprised to see both male and female officers kissing when they met!

That is France!

We duly booked into the Hotel Medieval.  Le Médiéval is an interesting 17th-century building and set in a former cardinal’s palace in Avignon’s historic centre.   We dined at the Le Lutrin and spent an enjoyable evening
