The Anglo-French Circle was formed in 1973. They will be having an Avignon evening in the future to commemorate the fact that it 40 years since the circle’s first visit there in 1973 – before there was a Twinning Society. At least one member of the Twinning Society went on that trip. There was also a group from the Town Hall on the trip – the Mayor and several Councillors. The Circle was formed to promote contact and understanding between France and Great Britain. Membership is open to anyone interested in the objects of the Society. The Circle is managed by a committee of members, with the Mayor in office invited to be President.
Anglo French prefers to be interested in all of France and not just Avignon. The Circle meets about 18 times a year, usually on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. Presentations are given on some aspect of French life and culture, or on the country itself, in French when possible. There are also several social events each year. At these more informal meetings there is an opportunity to socialize and to talk in French or English.
The Circle currently has over 60 members, with half to two thirds of the membership attending meetings. It is a lively, friendly group, some speaking only a little French, others are fluent or native speakers, but all united in a common interest in France.
The Circle maintains links with the Colchester Twinning Society and there are occasional joint events. Some members belong to both associations.
